Erik ten Hag drops new Man Utd signing hint as Marcus Thuram claim made
The feel-good factor is well and truly back at Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag has spirits high among the Old Trafford faithful, especially after the Red Devils secured an epic comeback victory over bitter rivals Manchester City on derby day. Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford gave United a resounding 2-1 win, sinking Pep Guardiola and co after Jack Grealish had handed the visitors a second-half lead.
Thankfully, the home crowd roared the Red Devils on to produce a trademark comeback. But there was also a new face in the stands after United confirmed the signing of Dutch striker Wout Weghorst on a half-season loan from Burnley. His arrival on Friday might not be the last of the window, though, as Ten Hag has hinted that his club could be back in the market before transfer deadline day.
Here’s a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.
Ten Hag drops signings hint
Manchester United could further add to their squad before January 31, so long as the “right player” becomes available. Speaking ahead of the derby, Erik ten Hag told reporters: “With Wout, we have an extra player. In the balance of the squad, it’s what we need. I am happy with that, so if there are more opportunities we will be ready for that and looking for that, but it has to be once again the right player.
“With the numbers here, I think with the signing of Wout and development of some players here – Alejandro Garnacho is the best example but also Kobbie Mainoo and Facundo Pellestri – I think also we have some good young players that can also fight for their minutes. They have to deserve it in training and when they are ready to compete, then we are not hesitating to play them.”
Weghorst’s wage details emerge
The finer details of Wout Weghorst’s loan move to Old Trafford have emerged. Having joined from Burnley until the end of the season after United paid £2.6million to cut short his loan with Turkish giants Bestikas, understands that the 30-year-old Netherlands international will enjoy a hefty pay rise in Manchester.
In fact, Weghorst will earn nearly double the £60,000-a-week salary that he was on at Burnley, whom he joined last January before failing to help them avoid relegation from the Premier League. No wonder he was so keen to sign for United.
Gladbach boss makes Thuram claim
Borussia Monchengladbach manager Daniel Farke has claimed there aren’t many clubs who appeal to reported United target Marcus Thuram. The 25-year-old French forward, who’s out of contract this summer, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and looks set to leave Borussia Park in June.
“If we’re talking about Marcus now, I don’t think there are that many clubs that particularly appeal to him,” Gladbach boss Farke declared in quotes carried by Sky Sports. “You can never rule out anything in this business but I am very, very sure that he will play a very, very good second half of the season for us.”
