“Lost my respect” – Man Utd fans have accused Wayne Rooney of ‘turning his back’ on the club
Wayne Rooney has claimed that the Glazers, the long-standing owners of Manchester United, have done a ‘fantastic’ job in their time at the club.
The Glazers have been widely hated among the United fanbase since they took over reins at the club in 2005.
United fans have been ecstatic since news of a sale came through at the end of last year, with the Glazers finally looking to move on and hand the reins over to owners who would be more involved at the club.
Wayne Rooney is currently Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 253 goals for the Red Devils during his time at the club from 2004-2017.
So it came as a surprise to many, that such a big figure in the club’s history came out in defence of the Glazers this weekend in an interview.
“Firstly, I think the Glazers have done a fantastic job,” Rooney told ESPN, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“They signed me in 2004 so they’ve been at the club for 20 years now and I think they’ve always allowed the managers to bring in the players that they want.”
Rooney did later state that “the fans want change”, and it looks like they will be getting it, while insisting that the club need to find owners who can re-establish the glory years at Old Trafford.
In 2010 though, while Wazza was at the club, he handed in a transfer request, questioning the ambition of the football club to take them back to the top.
It became a big episode all those years ago, with Chelsea and Manchester City courting the striker who seemingly wanted out at the age of 25.
As we know, everything was resolved in the end, with Rooney putting pen to paper to a new long-term deal and an agreed pay-rise, staying at the Red Devils to win a couple more Premier League titles, several cups and eventually break the scoring record held by Sir Bobby Charlton.
It seems like Rooney may have forgotten about that though, as shown by these quotes.
