Paul Scholes slams Manchester United for buying Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has blasted his former club’s decision to bring Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to Old Trafford last summer.

In recent years, Scholes has been vocal about his concerns over the way his former club is being ran. And he has now taken a swipe at the Red Devils’ recruitment.

During his appearance on Gary Neville’s The Overlap, Scholes said: “Jadon Sancho was a young player who Manchester United spent a lot of money on, who was unproven in the league. And why would a club like Real Madrid let Varane go?

“If you looked at him last season, he didn’t look right. I didn’t think it was a great transfer window. Nobody at the club is taking responsibility for it.”

Both Sancho and Varane have had a tough start to their United careers after the team endured a dismal 21/22 season, which saw them finish with the club’s lowest ever Premier League points tally.

Scholes admitted it was tough to watch United’s decline under the guidance of his former teammate, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He said: “He was trying.

“But it looked from the outside as if players were taking the p**s a little bit really, doing what they want, they were going on to the football pitch and in their own world, doing what they wanted to do rather than what was expected of them or what the manager wanted them to do. And performances just went.”

United fans will be hoping for a much improved showing this season after again spending big in the summer transfer window under new boss Erik ten Hag.

The Old Trafford club spent more than £200 million on the likes of Antony, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.

However, Scholes has been left unconvinced by the arrival of the former Real Madrid midfielder.

He said: “This year, Casemiro was done over two days.

“I wonder if it was the manager’s signing. A lot of money, a long contract. I think they need to put someone in charge of recruitment. Eventually, the manager will get blamed for it.”

Under Ten Hag, United started the season off in the worst possible way after two humiliating defeats against Brighton and Brentford, however, they seem to have turned a corner as they are currently on a four match win streak.

Next up for United will be a huge Manchester derby against City on Sunday afternoon.
