Alexis Sanchez makes it perfectly clear who he’s supporting ahead of Arsenal vs Man Utd
He may have represented both in his career, but Alexis Sanchez has made it clear he’s an Arsenal fan ahead of the Gunners’ huge Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The two teams meet at the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta’s men aim to put further daylight between themselves and nearest challengers Manchester City, who could be just two points behind them by the time kick-off rolls around against the Red Devils.
Arsenal have taken just about everyone by surprise this season and currently sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, which marks a drastic improvement from the Gunners-era Sanchez starred in from 2014 to 2018.
While an Arsenal player, few were loved more by the Emirates faithful than Sanchez. However, his exit to fierce rivals United in January 2018 tarnished his legacy in the eyes of most Arsenal fans.
With that being said, perhaps the anger has cooled over time given the official Arsenal Instagram account felt comfortable in showing one of Sanchez’s finest moments in the shirt as part of their build-up for the meeting with United.
The Chilean scored more than his fair share of goals for the Gunners, but Sanchez’s thunderous strike during the 3-0 win over United in October 2015 may be the pick of the bunch. It is for that reason Arsenal opted to post a video of the goal to their millions of followers, prompting an unexpected emotional response from the man himself.
Sanchez re-posted the goal alongside the message: “You remembered me, I will never forget you too. You will always be in my heart. You were my first family in England, and everybody took good care of me especially the fans. All the best Gunners.”
While the message has gone down very well with Arsenal fans, it is likely to only increase the disconnect between Sanchez and the United fanbase after his miserable spell at Old Trafford.
The forward netted a grand total of three Premier League goals across his entire two-and-half-year stint as a Red Devils player. To date, Sanchez’s move to Manchester is regarded as one of the most underwhelming transfers in recent English football history.
Things hardly got off to a great start according to the ex-Arsenal ace, as he once admitted he asked his agent if he could return to North London after one training session at United.
“Sometimes there are things that you don’t realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things,” Sanchez recalled.
“After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent ‘can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?’. They laughed, I told them there’s something that doesn’t sit right, it doesn’t seem good.
“But I already signed, I was already there. After the first few months I carried on having the same feeling, we weren’t united as a team in that moment.”
