Antony sends message to Ronaldo after unveiling new Man Utd celebration
Manchester United forward Antony has sent his congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo after watching the Portuguese chalk-up his 700th club career goal on Sunday.
The ex-Real Madrid forward netted the winning goal against the Toffees at Goodison Park and with it chalked up his landmark strike. Summer arrival Antony also got himself on the scoresheet with his curling effort cancelling out Alex Iwobi’s early opener.
The Brazilian also broke a Red Devils’ record with his goal having become the first-ever United player to have scored on their first three Premier League appearances for the club following his big-money summer switch from Dutch giants Ajax.
He certainly got in on the fun of the goal celebrations alongside Ronaldo with the pair standing together with their eyes closed after the Portuguese had netted the eventual winning goal.
Taking to Twitter after the game, Antony toasted Ronaldo for his milestone goal and hinted that he was looking forward to continuing celebrating alongside his Red Devils colleague.
He wrote: “What an honor for me!! Congratulations, @Cristiano !! Another great brand in a career full of achievements and achievements!! May we enjoy this even more together!!”
Of course, it remains to be seen how long Ronaldo will remain at Old Trafford and indeed play alongside Antony. The Portuguese submitted a request to leave the club in the summer but did not manage to seal a transfer away.
He is out of contract next summer and is able to engage in negotiations with interested parties as soon as January after the Qatar World Cup. In the meantime, United boss Erik ten Hag has predicted the goals to keep flowing for Ronaldo with him finally having opened his season account in the Premier League on Merseyside.
Speaking after the game, the Dutchman said: “That is really impressive, when you score 700 goals. It’s a huge performance, I’m really happy for him. I congratulate him on that performance and I’m also happy it’s his first goal this season in the Premier League – he had to wait for it and I’m sure there will be more goals.
“I think every player needs it, even when you are the best in the world, you need it, you need the goals.
“And I worked with many goalscorers, especially them, they need goals in every season to have that feeling, to have the confirmation of the intuition. And once they have some goals, they come in the flow and games go easier. That will happen with him as well.”
Antony and Ronaldo both have chances to extend their good recent runs over the next week with upcoming clashes against Omonia Nicosia and Newcastle United.
