Casemiro given new Brazil role that could make Erik ten Hag think twice at Man United
Casemiro will captain Brazil in their upcoming fixtures during the international break, leading to suggestions that Erik ten Hag could choose him for a similar role at Manchester United.
Since making his big money move from Real Madrid to United, Casemiro has become one of the standout performers this season.
His influence on and off the pitch has been vital as Ten Hag looks to rebuild United and bring back their former glories.
The impressive Casemiro has now been touted to become the United captain after it was reported by Globo that he will captain Brazil when they face Morocco in a friendly match on Saturday.
In the absence of Thiago Silva, Casemiro is set to step up to the role as he is the oldest and most experienced outfield player in the squad.
If Casemiro is to be named as his country’s permanent skipper, the questions will begin to be directed towards Ten Hag.
Over the last few weeks, the captaincy at United has been the talk of the town after Bruno Fernandes’ poor showing during the 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool.
Although Harry Maguire is United’s official captain, Fernandes has been wearing the armband as Maguire fell out of favour.
With Maguire linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford, Ten Hag may have to make a decision on his new captain.
However, Ten Hag showed his support for Fernandes, he said: “He’s playing a brilliant season, he’s had a really important role in why we’re in the position where we are, and he’s giving energy to the team – not only running a lot at the highest intensity but the right way and right direction.
“He’s coaching players, he’s an inspiration, but no-one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, we have to learn, he has to learn and he will, because he’s intelligent. I’m happy to have Bruno Fernandes in the team and that he’s captain when Harry isn’t on the pitch.”
