Ex-Ajax star reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo comparison as Antony admission made
Manchester United showed they can compete at the right end of the Premier League table of late following impressive performances against both Tottenham and Chelsea as they picked up four points.
But it was Cristiano Ronaldo ’s behaviour in that 2-0 defeat of Spurs that attracted more attention than the result itself, while ex-Ajax player Amin Younes has hit out at the comparisons made between him and the Portuguese. Elsewhere, Antony has been told he should have stayed at Ajax for one more year despite his impressive start to life with United.
Ex-Ajax star hits out at Ronaldo comparison
Ex-Ajax star Younes has hit out at the comparisons linking his behaviour to that of Ronaldo’s following the 37-year-old’s actions against Tottenham last week.
The Portuguese international stormed off down the players’ tunnel after refusing to come on as a substitute against Spurs, while Younes also did something similar when he played under none other than Erik ten Hag in Amsterdam.
Since the footage reemerged of Younes’ antics, he took to Twitter to shut down any comparisons. He wrote: “Totally not true! I signed 3 month before that happened already for SSC Napoli.(free agent) So it was clear that I leave the club! The context is totally different than many people tell!”
Edwin van der Sar takes swipe at Antony
Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar believes that Antony should have stayed one more year at Ajax before leaving the club, following his summer transfer to Man United.
The former Red Devils goalkeeper admitted that it was “hard to take” when the Brazilian forced his way out of the Amsterdam outfit and, despite his positive start to life at Old Trafford, he made an interesting admission over the 22-year-old, as well as fellow recruit Lisandro Martinez.
“It was our opinion they should stay for another year”, he told The Times. “I don’t think the way [Antony] handled it was the correct one, but it’s important all the players who leave Ajax have success because it reflects well on us.”
Raphael Varane “overreacted” to injury
Man United defender Raphael Varane has been accused of “overreacting” to the injury he sustained during the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.
The French international was visibly distraught as he was forced to leave the field at Stamford Bridge, with both United and Les Bleus fearing the worst ahead of next month’s World Cup. However, former United defender Jaap Stam has questioned Varane’s emotional reaction to the injury.
He told Premier League Productions : “You try to imagine yourself why a player is so emotional and why he is acting like that and I…I think there are other things that are worse than this.”
