Heartbreaking: The Unfortunate Reason Behind Phil Jones’ Absence of a Testimonial After Manchester United Departure
Reports have emerged stating that Manchester United defender Phil Jones has turned down the chance to have a testimonial match, despite being entitled to one after more than a decade at the club.
Jones, who joined United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 for a reported fee of £16 million, has made 229 appearances for the Red Devils. However, his playing time has significantly diminished in recent years due to a combination of injuries and a dip in form.
In 2019, Jones signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester United, extending his stay beyond the 10-year mark. As part of the deal, he had the option to request a testimonial match to commemorate his tenure at the club.
According to journalist Daniel Taylor of The Athletic, Jones decided not to pursue a testimonial, being aware of his declining popularity among fans. Taylor explained, “Jones, however, was acutely aware of his flagging popularity and, when the option of asking for a testimonial was brought up, he decided against it.”
Taylor further revealed that Jones has a self-deprecating sense of humor, often joking about his situation. When asked about the possibility of a testimonial, Jones would respond by quipping, “‘Apart from my mum and dad,’ he will say, ‘who else would turn up?'”
Those close to Jones acknowledge that the situation affects him emotionally, especially considering its impact on his wife, parents, and his young daughter, Alaria, who will one day read about these events.
Throughout his time at Manchester United, Jones has enjoyed success, winning several major trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, FA Community Shield, and Europa League.
As Jones’ contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, it is widely reported that he will leave United as a free agent.
