Man United expecting to take a huge loss on Harry Maguire as he’s placed up for sale
Manchester United are resigned to taking a huge loss on Harry Maguire if the central defender moves on from Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
Having impressed during his time at Leicester City, United decided to pay £80 million to take Maguire to Old Trafford back in 2019, which was a world record fee for a defender.
Maguire was soon named the captain of the Red Devils but his performances have largely been disappointing.
Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the 29-year-old has seen his game time drop drastically. The Dutchman brought in Lisandro Martinez to partner Raphael Varane whilst also opting for the likes of Victor Lindelof and left-back Luke Shaw ahead of Maguire.
This has led to rumours that the England international will be looking to move away in the summer.
The Daily Mail has reported that United are faced with taking a £40 million hit on the defender should they decide to part ways.
Maguire did get his fifth league start of the 22/23 season on Sunday in the 2-0 victory over Leeds United.
After the match, Maguire said: “It’s not about me, it’s about the club being successful and I want to be a part of it.
“I’m the captain and I put the team miles before myself. Whether I’m playing or not, I want the team to do well.
“I’m still getting my minutes. Everyone wants to start games, and it’s disappointing when you don’t. You have four international centre-backs at this club and there will always be two who are unhappy. I just have to be ready for when the chance comes.”
It is likely that Maguire will get some minutes between now and the end of the season as United are still in the mix for all four major trophies.
Up next for United will be the much-anticipated Europa League play-off clash against Barcelona on Thursday night.
