Man Utd fans are furious Anthony Martial wasn’t picked to replace Christopher Nkunku in France squad
Manchester United supporters believe Anthony Martial deserved to replace Christopher Nkunku in France’s World Cup squad ahead of who Didier Deschamps chose.
Despite missing chunks of the season through injury, Martial has reestablished himself as a favourite at Old Trafford following a tricky few years.
The 26-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with La Liga outfit Sevilla with many anticipating a permanent transfer away.
United manager Erik ten Hag took a look at Martial in pre-season and decided to give him one more shot.
Martial has repaid that faith with four goals in all competitions. What goes unnoticed is how important he is to United’s overall build-up. It’s noticeable when he’s absent from the starting XI.
United fans hoped he would find a way to represent his country for the first time since last July at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
RB Leipzig midfielder Christopher Nkunku was selected in the final 26-man squad but suffered an injury in training on Tuesday.
In his place, Deschamps has decided to call up Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani.
The 23-year-old, who made his international debut in September, has scored five goals and registered 10 assists since joining Frankfurt from Nantes in the summer. A sensational output.
It hasn’t gone down well on social media, though. Members of United’s passionate online fanbase think it should’ve been Martial joining up with Les Bleus.
One person commented: “They’re taking someone from the Bundesliga over Martial?”
Another said: “Wish it was Martial who got the call.”
A third tweeted: “No way Martial is missing another World Cup.”
While someone put: “I’m tired man he’s never getting his moment for France.”
France are in Group D at the World Cup alongside Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.
The current holders have a tricky task on their hands if they want to replicate their success in Russia four years ago.
Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, members of their 2018 World Cup-winning squad, will miss the tournament through injury.
Presnel Kimpembe was forced to withdraw from the squad earlier this week through injury, while there are no guarantees Raphael Varane will be match-fit for their first group game against Australia on November 22.
