Manchester United fans create a new song mocking Frenkie de Jong after beating Barcelona
Manchester United fans mocked Frenkie de Jong with a new song, after their team dumped Barcelona out of the Europa League.
Back in the summer, Erik ten Hag was desperate to reunite with De Jong at Old Trafford, having worked with the midfielder at Ajax previously.
Barcelona seemed more than happy to let the Dutchman leave for the right price, as they attempted to lower their wage bill, but the player had no interest in moving.
It was claimed that the 25-year-old would have considered going to another Champions League team but with United only in the Europa League that wasn’t the move for him.
Fast forward to February and Ten Hag’s side knocked De Jong and Barca out of the competition that he never wanted to play, after Xavi’s team had finished third in their Champions League group.
After the game, as he trudged off with his teammates, a section of the home fans mocked the player who could have been staring for them, singing ‘Frenkie what’s the score’ at him, as you can see in the video below.
De Jong certainly was making United fans wish they’d signed him in the first half, as the visitors dominated the game and took the lead through a Robert Lewandowski penalty.
However, in the second half the hosts took control of the game and Fred levelled things up, to make it 3-3 on aggregate and put the game back in the balance.
De Jong was then involved again as Bruno Fernandes smacked the ball at him from close range, as he was on the ground, with some United fans thinking it was payback from the summer.
Half time substitute Antony then slotted home the winner, with a lovely effort curling past Marc-Andre ter Stegen, knocking Barca out of their second European competition of the season.
Not all of the home supporters wanted to mock the player who turned them down six months ago, and some even believe his actions after the match proved he wants to move to Old Trafford in the summer.
The full time scenes inside the stadium were brilliant, with Raphael Varane riling up the crowd to celebrate with even more gusto.
Some noticed that De Jong was paying extra attention to what was going on as he, and his Barcelona teammates, walked off the pitch.
If they do bring the former Ajax man to the north west of England next season then the thought of him and Casemiro in midfield together would certainly be an exciting one for United.
