Manchester United players don’t want Mason Greenwood to return after charges are dropped
Some Manchester United stars reportedly don’t want Mason Greenwood to return to the fold this season. This is according to a new report from The Sun.
There are fears that the re-introduction of the 21-year-old could halt the progress that they have made on the pitch under boss Erik ten Hag.
The forward had his charges for attempted rape and assault dropped against him, but he still faces a club investigation into whether or not he can be reintegrated.
Greenwood last played for the club in January 2022 and while the investigation continues, he is suspended and is unable to train or play for the Manchester side.
The club released a statement on Thursday, just three hours after the Crown Prosecution Service announced that the charges were dropped.
What have Manchester United said about Mason Greenwood?
It said: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropp
“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps.
“We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
He does, however, remain on United’s Premier League squad list as he was named among their under-21 players at the start of the campaign.
Greenwood released his own statement after the news on Thursday.
What has Greenwood said since the charges were dropped?
He said: “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.
“There will be no further comment at this time.”
The 21-year-old has been capped once for England during a UEFA Nations League game against Iceland in September 2020.
A source told The Sun: “The players are open to him returning to the team but the scrutiny could be massively distracting.
“The dressing room is the happiest it has been for ages and no one wants to rock the boat.”
Manchester United’s impressive season so far on the pitch
A major reason for the club’s impressive turnaround this season is Ten Hag.
The side reached the Carabao Cup final in midweek after seeing off Nottingham Forest and they currently sit third in the Premier League.
That’s after they overcame a late Crystal Palace fightback yesterday to seal a 2-1 victory at a feelgood Old Trafford.
A Bruno Fernandes penalty and yet another goal by Marcus Rashford put the home side 2-0 up.
But a Casemiro red card, following a scuffle between players from both sides, gave Palace hope.
