Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left Man United staff in tears after sacking
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left Manchester United staff in tears after his sacking back in 2021.
Solskjaer was brought in as the caretaker manager after the club dismissed Jose Mourinho during the 18/19 season.
The former player-turned-manager hit the ground running straight away as United won their first match under Solskjaer 5-1. He later led the Red Devils to a second-place finish in the 20/21 season.
Despite the promising start, Solskjaer’s United tenure ended horribly in the 21/22 campaign. United brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in a bid to close the gap to Manchester City.
However, the results were poor as Solskjaer’s last match in charge of United was an embarrassing 4-1 defeat by Watford.
According to The Athletic, Solskjaer left a number of United staff in tears after surprising them with a parting gift on the back of his sacking.
It is believed that Solskjaer sent a luxury Christmas hamper as a thank-you, and the kind gesture reported made ‘several’ of his former colleagues cry.
After his dismissal, Solskjaer explained it was the right time to step aside.
He told MUTV: “For the club, for the fans, for the players, for the staff. I wanted us to take the next step to challenge for the league, to win trophies and I only think it’s right that it comes from the horse’s mouth.
“I don’t want to answer all… there’s going to be journalists asking me about interviews but no, I’m not going to do any interviews. I want to get it out there, I’m going to leave by the front door because I think everyone knows I’ve given everything for this club.
“This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.”
