Wayne Rooney responds to Cristiano Ronaldo’s interview after he appeared to call him a ‘rat’
Wayne Rooney has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo’s full interview has now been released in which he spoke about Erik ten Hag, the owners and Rooney himself as well as a number of other subjects.
To say it’s caused quite a stir is an understatement.
What did Ronaldo say about Rooney?
Rooney is one of a handful of former Man Utd players who urged the club to sell Ronaldo in the summer.
Ronaldo admitted he didn’t understand Rooney’s point of view, saying: “I don’t know why he criticises me so badly… probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level. I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true…”
Then, on Thursday night a clip emerged that appeared to show Ronaldo saying Rooney ‘a rat.’
Near the start of the interview’s second act, Morgan asked Ronaldo: “Do you have more pounds in the bank or more Instagram followers?”
Ronaldo, who currently has 497 million followers on the social media platform, cheekily replied: “Probably similar, I don’t know!”
“I’m just trying to work out how Wayne Rooney could hate you even more, probably that’s the answer,” the high-profile journalist said.
Ronaldo replied: “Well, not only him, imagine the rest of the ‘rats’ that are going to criticise me too!”

What has Rooney said about the Ronaldo interview?
Well, it was reported earlier this week that Rooney was ‘bemused’ by the Ronaldo interview.
And now we’ve heard from him for the first time.
When asked about the Ronaldo interview, Rooney replied: “He’s a fantastic player. Him and Messi are probably the two best players to play the game. It’s not criticism, what I’ve said is age comes to all of us, Cristiano is finding it hard to deal with that.
“He’s done an interview and it’s gone global, Bit strange some of the comments but I’m sure #mufc will deal with it once they see the full interview and take whatever action they need to take.”

What have Man Utd said about the Ronaldo interview?
As Rooney suggests, Man Utd will ‘deal’ with the full interview and take whatever action they need.
They’ve already released a statement saying: “Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo. The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established. Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans.”
Now that the full interview has emerged, it will be interesting to see what happens now…
